UsefulHow to decorate Boys’ May Festival Dolls
Sandan-kazari (three-tiered decoration) is the traditional way of decorating.
The upper section is decorated with a helmet, bow and sword on either side, and a folding screen behind the helmet. The middle section is arranged with a battle hat, war fan, and other decorations. The lower tier is decorated with iris wine placed on three sides, “Chimaki” rice cakes wrapped in bamboo leaves, and “Kashiwa mochi” rice cakes wrapped in oak leaves. Finally, camp lanterns are placed on both sides of the three tiers. Today, there are even more luxurious five-tiered decorations and simpler two-tiered decorations.
