TriviaTypes of Hina doll faces
The styles of "faces" also transformed with the times
There are several variations in the face shapes of Hina dolls, but the following two types are the most common.
Marugao
These Hina Dolls have a round face based on the “Amagatsu” Dolls’ head. This style is seen in “Tachi-bina" standing Hina dolls until the Edo period and "Muromachi-bina" dolls from the Muromachi period (1336–1573). The design emphasizes the gentle expression and childishness of the doll.
Omonaga
Hina dolls with long and narrow faces are seen especially in the elegant “Kyoho-bina” Dolls. This style has a more prestigious and formal atmosphere.
